
Region 15 Fall Recap

After winning the Region 15 Men's Soccer Championship on its home field on November 2, Nassau Community College won its quarterfinal match of the NJCAA Tournament over Joliet Junior College, 4-0, at Genesee Community College in Batavia, N.Y., on November 12, to earn a berth in the national semifinal. Forde Balde made five saves to earn the shutout and Marco Russo scored a pair of goals, including the match-winner, to help the Lions win the NJCAA Quarterfinal match.
On the women's soccer side, Suffolk County Community College won the regional championship on the campus of St. Joseph's University - Long Island on November 2. On November 13, the Sharks defeated Rowan College South Jersey - Gloucester, 2-1, in the quarterfinal round of the NJCAA Tournament at Genesee CC, to earn a berth in the national final four. Anastassia Gallego scored the match-winning goal of the quarterfinal to break a 1-1 tie in the 71st minute.
In women's volleyball, Nassau captured the Region 15 Championship and North Atlantic A District Championships on November 2 on the campus of Dutchess Community College, to earn an automatic bid into the NJCAA Tournament in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Elizabeth Wagner of the Lions produced 23 assists and five aces in the championship match and was named MVP of the Region 15 Postseason.
The Monroe University - Bronx women's volleyball team captured its third straight district title by winning a five-set thriller over Queensborough Community College earlier in the day. Aleishka Diaz had a strong match with eight kills, a match-best 20 digs, and a trio of aces to help clinch a spot in nationals for the Express. She ended up on the Region 15 All-Tournament team.
For cross country in Division III, Suffolk County captured the Region 15 Championship for the men, while Fashion Institute of Technology captured the Region 15 Title on the women's side. The championship meets took place at Sunken Meadow State Park in Kings Park, N.Y. on October 19. Alexander Bento finished sixth overall in the 8k race for the Sharks with a time of 29:08.3. Olivia Corabi earned silver in the 5k race for the FIT Tigers with a time of 20:46.5. Both regional championship teams earned spots in the NJCAA Cross Country Championships. Bento earned the selection of the NJCAA Northeast Athlete of the Year.
At the NJCAA Division Championship Women's Cross Country Meet, at Pole Green Park in Richmond, Va., on November 9, Corabi finished seventh overall in the 5k race with a time of 20:11.0. As a result, she was named to the NJCAA All-America second team and was named the NJCAA Athlete of the Year for the Northeast Region. Howard Lindsay of FIT was named the Northeast Region Coach of the Year.
In Division I Cross Country, the Monroe University Mustangs men's and women's teams both captured the Region 15 Championships. The meets took place at Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx on October 6. On the men's side, Tinashe Bure earned first place overall in the 8k run, finishing with a time of 27:12.0. For the women, Attoya Harvey earned gold in the 3.11-mile with a time of 20:53.3. Both Monroe cross country programs competed in the NJCAA Division I Cross Country Championships at Pole Green Park on November 9.
